FCT Hosts Inclusive World AIDS Day Symposium

The Federal Capital Territory through the Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES) will host an inclusive and community-focused symposium as part of activities marking the 2025 World AIDS Day commemoration.

In a statement released by the Special Assistant on Media to the Mandate Secretary, Bola Ajao, the Secretariat confirmed that this year’s theme is “Overcoming Disruption: Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response.”

The Director of Public Health, Dr. Dan Gadzama, and the Mandate Secretary, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe have directed full participation in global efforts to raise awareness and curb the spread of HIV/AIDS.

He said the Secretariat will host a one-day high-level symposium on Tuesday, 2nd December 2025, in Abuja.

The symposium is expected to bring together policymakers, health workers, development partners, people living with HIV/AIDS, and members of the community to review progress, share experiences, and identify opportunities to strengthen HIV programmes across the FCT.

Dr. Gadzama noted that the gathering will provide a platform for stakeholders to “speak with one voice” and collectively support efforts to improve the HIV response and protect vulnerable groups.

The State Programme Coordinator for HIV/AIDS, STIs, and Viral Hepatitis, Dr. Fatima Daggash explained that World AIDS Day, observed globally on December 1, is a moment to honour those lost to AIDS related illnesses, celebrate achievements, and renew commitment to ending the epidemic.

She stressed that bringing all stakeholders together is vital for honest reflection on current realities and for developing strategies to improve service delivery, community engagement, and programme implementation.

Dr. Daggash added that this year’s activities will also feature free HIV counselling and testing, as well as community sensitization campaigns aimed at promoting early diagnosis, ensuring linkage to care, sustaining viral suppression, and reducing stigma.

She reaffirmed the Secretariat’s commitment to fostering collaboration and building a stronger, more resilient HIV response for all residents of the FCT.
